1. What is the role of the Deputy Principal, Curriculum?
Welcome to the Curriculum Office. My role is to oversee the delivery of curriculum across the school to all students. As such, I work with faculties to ensure that the programs being offered are compliant with syllabus requirements, are stimulating, and offer our gifted students challenging learning experiences and valid assessment opportunities. This means that all assessment tasks for Years 10 – 12 come over my desk.
I regularly talk to Head Teachers and staff about what they are assessing and how they are assessing student achievement. The assessment booklets which are issued to all students in Years 10-12, are prepared by myself and the Head Teachers to give students the information they need to successfully navigate through the murky waters of formal assessment.
Our assessment policy, published in the booklets, reflects the requirements of the Board of Studies; we also include a calendar of the tasks for the year to assist students with their planning and preparation.
As the year progresses I work with Year Advisers and Head Teachers to prepare students before they choose elective subjects for Year 9 and Year 11. This process involves student presentations about the subjects on offer, a published booklet with information about each of the courses and a selection format that includes parents in the choices being made.
I monitor student progress both via the reports and through the N - Warning letter process. I try to intervene early with students who are experiencing difficulty with the demands of their academic program.
At Gosford HS we are constantly revisiting the curriculum we offer students to ensure that it is innovative and challenging for our gifted clientele.
